Why the mako wins
A shortfin mako has a streamlined, near-cylindrical body, a narrow caudal peduncle with keels and a high-aspect-ratio crescent tail. Those features generate thrust efficiently at speed. Like other lamnid sharks, it can retain metabolic heat in parts of its body, allowing swimming muscles and sensory systems to operate above surrounding water temperature.
Burst is not cruise
The headline number refers to short acceleration, not an all-day travel speed. Sustained high speed costs enormous energy and increases drag. Tracking studies of free-swimming sharks usually report much lower routine speeds because animals spend most of life searching, migrating and conserving energy rather than sprinting.
A hard record to certify
Boat-based estimates can confuse the shark’s speed with current, line tension or the motion of the observer. Tags improve measurement but may sample too slowly to capture a very short burst, while video requires a calibrated scale and camera geometry. This is why the identity of the champion is more secure than a precise world-record number.
Built for open-water prey
Makos pursue tuna, billfish and squid in pelagic habitats where both predator and prey benefit from speed and endurance. Their performance is a whole-body solution: shape, tail mechanics, circulation, muscle temperature and behavior work together. Calling the mako fast is accurate; reducing that ecology to a single mph figure is not.
