The usable answer
NOAA Fisheries summarizes the species at roughly four feet at birth and up to 21 feet as an adult. That does not mean every population regularly produces 21-foot animals. Most mature white sharks are smaller, and the largest individuals are uncommon females that have survived decades of growth.
Why old records inflate
Historic reports may use estimates made alongside boats, weights calculated from incomplete carcasses or lengths measured after parts were removed. Perspective, refraction and a curved body can bias photographs. A trustworthy modern estimate should describe whether length was measured directly, derived by photogrammetry or inferred from a tag, and provide an error range.
Length is not weight
Mass rises faster than length because a larger shark is also deeper and wider. Pregnancy, stomach contents and body condition further change the number. Converting a dramatic length claim into a precise weight without population-specific measurements creates false accuracy; “several thousand pounds” may be more honest than a number to the nearest pound.
A large but vulnerable fish
Size can look like invulnerability, yet white sharks mature slowly—NOAA reports approximate maturity at 26 years for males and 33 for females. Low productivity makes the species sensitive to bycatch and historical overfishing. Record hunting should never obscure the life-history reason large adults matter so much to a population.
