Shark skin feels rough because it is covered in backward-pointing dermal denticles. Denticles can protect the body and alter water flow, but their hydrodynamic effect depends on their shape, spacing and location.

Built like tiny armor
A dermal denticle has a crown exposed at the surface and a base anchored in the skin. Its dentine and enameloid make it structurally similar to a tooth, which is why placoid scales are often called skin teeth. The crowns overlap or interlock differently across species, shielding softer tissue while still allowing the body to flex.
Flow, not magic
Ribbed denticles can organize the thin boundary layer of water next to the body and help control separation or turbulence in some swimming conditions. That has inspired swimsuits, coatings and engineered surfaces. Yet “shark skin eliminates drag” goes too far: measured performance depends on denticle geometry, movement, speed and placement, and a rigid imitation may not reproduce a living, flexing surface.
The skin carries load
Beneath the denticles, helically arranged collagen fibers make shark skin strong in different directions. Recent mechanical testing across species shows that ecology, age and body region influence stiffness, toughness and extensibility. The skin can act as more than packaging; it contributes to the mechanics of a pressurized swimming body.
Different jobs, different shapes
Fast pelagic sharks, bottom dwellers and deep-sea species do not share one denticle blueprint. Denticles can vary even from the leading edge to the flank of a single animal. That diversity is evidence that protection, parasite resistance, abrasion and hydrodynamics all matter, with the balance changing across lifestyles.
