How underwater odor works
Water must carry dissolved molecules into a shark’s paired nares, where folded olfactory tissue contains receptor cells. Turbulence breaks a source into intermittent filaments rather than a smooth gradient. A shark may track changes in arrival timing and concentration while also using vision, lateral-line signals and electroreception.
Why distance is the wrong unit
One drop in still water and one drop in a fast current produce different plumes. Source strength, time, mixing, temperature and background chemistry all change the concentration that reaches a receiver. A threshold measured for one odor and species in a tank cannot honestly be converted into one fixed distance in the ocean.
Blood is not a command
Fish tissue, amino acids and other prey-associated chemicals can be meaningful cues. Human blood is chemically detectable too, but people are not normal shark prey, and smelling a compound does not switch off the animal’s other senses or learned behavior. Sharks frequently investigate and reject possible food.
A multisensory hunt
Controlled sensory experiments show sharks shifting among cues as they approach a target. Odor may help with longer-range orientation down-current; water displacement and vision become useful at closer range; electroreception can guide a final strike. The myth survives by turning that layered process into a single exaggerated superpower.
